How To Move A Selection In Krita

Are you struggling because when you move something, the entire layer moves? This is because the default settings of Krita are set this way.

Move Tool

The move tool is a wonderful element that you can use to move an object, a layer, or parts of a layer. It can be found in the tools panel on the left side of your Krita window.

It looks like four arrows intersecting as a cross; a shortcut for activating the move tool is to hit the T key on your keyboard.

Move A Selection In Krita

Sometimes you may wish to move a specific part of your project, not the entire layer. To do so, making a selection first is important; try to be as precise as possible for your work to become more cohesive and proper.

The steps given below will help you understand the process of moving a selection in Krita.

  1. Open up your document containing the project you are working on in Krita.
  2. Go to the tools panel on the left side of your window.
  3. Choose the Selection tool.
  4. Click and drag the cursor across the object that you wish to move.
  5. When the selection is made, you will see a circle with a dotted line around it.
  6. Now, select the move tool or hit T.
  7. Click on your selection and drag it around to move it to your desired position.
  8. You can repeat this process multiple times until you have the perfect position for your selection.

Move A Layer In Krita

In Krita, the default with the Move tool is to move the entire layer that an object is on. For example, if a square is on Layer 1 and a circle is on Layer 2, you can move all of Layer 2 if you move the circle. This occurs irrespective of which layer you are currently working on.

This feature is very helpful as it allows you to move an entire layer without individually moving each object. The distance between the object and the ratio of the layer is kept consistent.

To move a layer in Krita, follow the instructions below.

  1. Open up the document that you wish to be working on.
  2. Now go to the layers panel on the right side of your window.
  3. Click on the layer that you want to move and work with.
  4. Once the layer is selected, go to the tools panel.
  5. Here, choose the Move tool and drag the entire layer around to move it.
  6. Release your mouse when your layer is in your desired position.
