That’s when temporarily suspending the Auto Align tool comes in handy. You can disable it when working with those particular objects, but it still actually stays on as the default setting. So the next time you’re placing objects, they will snap together as usual.

To temporarily disable Auto Align only takes a couple of mouse clicks.

How Do You Lighten Up a Photo in Affinity? 

So now we come to the main event. How exactly do you use Affinity Photo to brighten up a photo that’s too dark? Fortunately, it’s quite simple as long as you know the right steps to take. 

Follow the steps below to smoothly and easily brighten any image in Affinity Photo:

  1. Open the program and import or load your image: Before you can do anything else you’re going to need to open the program and either load the file with your image already in it or import the image itself into a new document. 
  2. Add a levels adjustment layer: Click the icon to add an adjustment layer and select levels from the dropdown menu. The icon you click should be near the bottom right of the screen on the panel where your layers can be found. It is a small circle with one shaded. 
  3. Change the Blend Mold to luminosity: Before we start adjusting the levels that will change your phone’s brightness, it’s a good idea to change the Blend Mold (located at the bottom of the window) to luminosity by clicking the dropdown menu next to it. This will prevent your adjustments from inadvertently changing the saturation. 
  4. Adjust White/Black Levels and Gamma for a brighter image: To get a brighter image you simply need to slide the white levels to the right or the gamma to the left. Additionally the black levels will also have an impact on the brightness of the image. You can experiment until you get the brightness you desire. 

This is the easiest and most basic way to manually adjust the brightness of your photo. Still, it may not be the only way. In the next section we’ll take a dive into whether or not there are multiple ways to change brightness and what they might be.

Unfortunately, for those who use Affinity Designer, there is no available Alpha Lock function. However, there are a few workarounds to create the same effect.

The easiest way to replicate Alpha Lock in Affinity Designer is to use layer clipping. Essentially, what this does is position one layer inside another so that the path of the parent layer acts as the boundary for the clipped layer.

The square would act as the parent layer, and the new layer, or child layer, is where you would apply your pattern.

To create a clipped layer, you will start by creating the layer that will act as your child layer. This could be a blank layer that you will draw in as you go, or you could create your painting beforehand. Either way works.

Next, find the layer or object that will act as the parent layer. Any object can act as a parent layer, so it’s important to make sure that only the layer you want to work with is selected before creating your clipped layer.

To clip the layers together:

  1. Click on the child layer (the layer that will be adding the paint)
  2. Drag and drop it onto the thumbnail of the parent layer.
  3. In the layers panel, you should now see the child layer sitting beneath the parent layer.

Now, anything added to the child layer will be confined by the boundary set by the parent layer.

Using Protect Alpha in Affinity Designer

Another method of confining paint to a certain layer is to use “Protect Alpha.” This is a setting on the Paintbrush Tool that, when checked, keeps the paint on the current layer’s solid areas. This means that no transparent regions can be colored and the paint won’t move into other layers. However, this can only be done when using the Pixel Persona.

To use Protect Alpha:

  1. Switch into Pixel Persona then select the Paint Brush Tool.
  2. Next, on the context menu at the top of the screen, locate Protect Alpha and make sure the box is checked.
  3. Now, click on the layer you would like to paint from the layers panel and start painting. Everything you add will be contained within that layer.
